What Is Social Media (and why should you care?)

Seems you can't turn on the news these days or open the home page on your favorite web browser without something being said about social media and the effect it's having in communicating on the internet.
But what is social media?
You've probably heard of social media websites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, right? These are the online communities where people share information like photos, videos and their favorite recipe for carrot cake. Well, initially that may have been true, but not anymore.
The social media platform has done for marketers and business people what could never have been imagined just 20 short years ago.
It has connected, on a global scale, products and customers in exactly the same way the door-to-door salesman used to connect in his neighborhood territory.
Fortunately for the sales guy or gal of today who uses social media marketing, the ability to target their chosen audience through the online groups and forums they frequent gives them the ultimate edge over the hit-and-miss of yesterday's marketing.
Let's use Facebook as an example. The number of targeted groups available is amazing. There are groups for Formula One race car enthusiasts, parents of Autistic kids and tons of groups catering just to Real Estate professionals, Investors, Forex Traders. I could go on for days.
The point is, social media is EVERYWHERE.
There is a group or on-going discussion for nearly every topic you can imagine. And there is a target market that can benefit from your product or service within that group. The important thing to remember is to help people solve their problems and provide tons of valuable information for them.
Unfortunately What happens many times is that marketers on the social media sites don't know how to play well with others. They jump right in and immediately start "pitching their deal" and shoot themselves in the foot before people barely know who they are.
Would you want to do business with anyone who is only interested in separating you from your money without the faintest idea of who you are and what you truly need? Nope, me either. But it happens all the time when people use the social media platform for their marketing.
A place I've found that teaches how to do Social Media Marketing right is Renegade University. It's a free online resource that teaches even the newest of internet newbies how to attract business to them using Social Media and many other internet marketing techniques.
So to answer our original question, what is social media?
It's the internet version of an offline networking group or a business mixer. What makes it so powerful is the global reach it has. Do it right. Put the other person first. Provide value to your online community and you'll have more business than you can handle. And that's a very nice place to be.
