Social sites are an excellent source of leads for network marketing distributors. There are a number of distributors who have reached the top levels in their compensation plan primarily by using only social sites.
That being said, there are also a number of distributors who struggle immensely with making these sites pay off for their mlm lead generation efforts. There is a right way and there is a wrong way to use social sites to build your business.
Here are the top mistakes made by network marketers when trying to build their network marketing business using social sites:
Mistake #1 – Spamming Prospects on Social Sites
The most common mistake made by distributors using social sites to recruit and build an organization is spamming.
Spamming is when you send or post an explicit commercial message on social sites to people who didn’t request such information.
Spamming on social sites is the same as spamming in email.
It creates ill will in the mind of the prospect toward you and your business.
In addition, it is against the terms and conditions of most social sites to do this. If you are caught, you will get your account blocked or deleted.
Mistake #2 – Trying to Recruit on the Social Networking Site Itself
The purpose of using social networking sites to recruit for your business is to use it as a source for prospects. Once you have identified prospects for your business, your next focus should be to try to move the prospect off the website to some type of live interaction.
For example, if you are able to get some type of instant message screen name for the prospect, this allows you to communicate with them in some type of live venue.
The advantage is that now you can go back and forth and better direct them to more information about your opportunity.
What’s even more effective is to get the prospect’s telephone number. They will be able to hear your passion in your voice, which is ten times more effective than trying to send messages over the social networking site.
Mistake #3 – Not using Groups and Communities on Social Sites Effectively
One of the best tools you have at your disposal when marketing on social sites is the use of groups and communities. These are pre-defined associations of people that you can leverage all in one place to prospect for your business opportunity.
For example, suppose your company is doing a blitz on military professionals. You can do a search for groups and communities on these social sites where military professionals are. Now you have a pool of contacts that you can tap into.
Most network marketing distributors who use these types of websites don’t leverage them to their full advantage.
Mistake #4 – Not taking advantage of geographical features on social sites
Building a local team is an excellent way to build a network marketing business.
Unfortunately the internet tends to make this very difficult because most marketing strategies online market to target groups by topic, not by geographical area.
Social sites allow you to target prospects by geographical area. You can meet people right in your local area you otherwise might have never met.
These people can be invited out to hotel meetings, sit down presentations in coffee shops and other live events in your area.

By avoiding these common mistakes in using social sites you should get more mileage out of your prospecting efforts and recruit more distributors in the process.
