Squidoo for Marketers

By Michelle Moseley

This is an overview of Squidoo. I first learned about Squidoo about 18 months ago as of the time of this writing, July 2009. I had never heard of it before taking the trainings at The Renegade University.

So, what is Squidoo?

Squidoo is another awesome internet marketing tool. Squidoo is an article writing platform. Read more here. It's completely free to join. All you have to do is get signed up and then, think about what you are passionate about. Now you have a place to tell others about it. So, tell us. You will find lots of other people interested in what you are talking about.

This is from a Squidoo Lens I recently read. I've moved it here for you to read.

1. Squidoo has nearly 900,000 hand built lenses. That's just shy of a whole million pages created by real, remarkable people.

2. Squidoo has been reviewed by the New York Times, Mashable, BoingBoing and sites and papers around the world. But the reviews we're most proud of: those from our lensmasters, who talk about Squidoo and their lenses on their blogs.

2.5 We call our pages "lenses" because each is one person's focus on something that she's interested in, something that matters to her.

3. Squidoo was founded in 2005 and was live to the world in 2006. The founding team consisted of just four people. In 2009 we're only at 6 full time people.

4. We are one of the 300 most popular websites in the US.

5. Squidoo grew 91% in 2008

6. We launched the site with the tagline "Everyone's an expert (on something)" We have since learned that while this is indeed true, most people are too humble to consider themselves serious experts. Rather, most people think of themselves as hobbyists, passionates, interested (and interesting) folks. And that's what we've got here. Taglines are overrated.

7. We generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual royalties to charities and to our users.

8. About 35% of our lensmasters donate royalties to charity.

9. There's a Squidoo cookbook. Seth and Megan wrote The Joy of Squidoo: A Recipe Book for Great Lenses.

10. If you want to know more about Seth Godin, Original Squid and founder and bestselling author and blogger,

 read here

11. We don't gather demographics, but anecdotally, it's pretty obvious that we've been hijacked by some of the smartest stay at home women and moms and independent writers on the web. Not by design, but by luck.

12. Many lensmasters earn more than $1,000 a year from Squidoo. Some make $10,000. Others are happy with $40 or $4.

13. Most of our best users aren't here for the money. It's just a fortunate byproduct of their passion and great content.

14. As of Feb 1 2009: About 420,000 people visit Squidoo (that means your lenses) every day. The more traffic one lens brings in, the greater the chances that visitor will see your lens as well. That means it's good for you when your competition on Squidoo succeeds.

15. Over 100,000 people are subscribed by email to Kimberly's SquidU Review Newsletter, full of tips for making better lenses. Wow.

16. Squidoo hasn't taken funding from anyone other than ourselves.

17. SquidU is our lensmaster-run community for teaching and talking about great lenses.

18. Squidoo is free to use.

So, there you have some exceptional numbers about how using Squidoo can benefit any one for any thing.

Now on to some of the functions and tools.

There's the "daily digest" where you can see how each of your lenses is doing for that day. Keep track and edit where necessary. Lens doing well? Great! Check in on it tomorrow.

The "My Lenses" button allows toy to see all your created lenses at a glance. You can see what its rank is, its rating, how many visits you've had and when it was last edited.

There's a "my stats" button, a "my comments" button for checking out your comments before they are published. A cool feature. Someone leave a negative response? It's up to you if you publish it or delete it.

The "my profile" button is for putting in a picture, giving us a tid bit about you. and changing anything about your account. Change your email address, etc.

The "my favorites" button is for all the lenses from other people that you have liked and favorited. There's a place on each lense where you can click on the "favorite" button to do this.

Each Squidoo lens has a place to leave comments. The more comments, the better. When you comment on someone's lens, it automatically gets put to the top of the list of all lenses, briefly. There are so many lenses being generated minute by minute that there is not any one on top for long. When you comment on someone's lens and it gets the top position for a brief moment, it is visable again to everyone. The more this happens, the better chance of having others read it and then leave their comment. Commenting is great for exposure as well as making the Internet search engines happy. Another thing, when you comment on someone elses content, they in turn comment on yours. It's a win-win situation. Help and be helped.

So, why don't you go over to Squidoo and create a lens? It's free and easy. If you are still not sure and would like step by step training, head on over to the Renegade University/Professional.
