The Merging of SEO and Social Media

By: Eric Walker

Understanding the Evolution of SEO and Social Media

First, let’s make a few common agreements about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and the relationship it has with Social Media.

If you agree with these SEO and Social Media agreements, I recommend you continue reading. If you disagree, you will want to state your disagreement in the comments area. I’m open to your feedback.

The purpose of this article is to shed light on the significant importance that SEO and Social Media have on each other. If you are using free and low cost web 2.0 Social Marketing methods for your internet business, this article will immediately provide you with a better understanding of how social media marketing impacts SEO.

The Four SEO and Social Media Agreements:

Agreement #1 – Social Media is here to stay. It’s not a fluke, and it’s going to rapidly alter the way business is done. As if it already hasn’t!

Agreement #2 – To understand the common elements that affect SEO is a important for your business because with time, practice and patience reaching atop the search engines for your keyword terms will provide better business security and opportunity.

Agreement #3 – Search engines such as Google are targeting social media. In other words, they’re keeping a close eye for what is happening socially on the internet.

They are ranking it and giving benefit to it because what the search engines want is what the people want, and how else can you tell what the people want?

Search engines such as Google best determine what the people want is to gauge what they’re paying attention to on the social web.

Agreement #4 – Generally speaking, successful SEO in today’s social web rely on two important factors:

  • Incoming links
  • Social buzz

SEO gurus now realize that the kinds of search engine rankings they seek through their cocktail of the pure SEO application process, and in-depth analysis over a period of time, is realized much sooner with a high quality social media marketing campaign. Social Media Marketing and Search Engine Optimization work in a interconnected way.

Effective Social Media Marketing Equates to Proper Content Syndication

The effective implementation and effect of successful social media marketing is known as content syndication.

Content syndication can be accomplished through the proper use of strategic social media networking to gain more traction through the parameters of various social media forms, technologies and applications.

So you don’t have to go through the hoops and tweaks of pure SEO, or be an SEO Geek. Yet it will benefit you to understand the relative Yin and Yang of social media networking and social media marketing. The two must work synergistically for maximum search engine rankings.

One factor of successful SEO is to build relevantly themed inbound links, and the more the better, but there are two conundrums:

  1. In order to create a lot of incoming links, you may have to purchase those links, which is not looked upon as favorably by the search engines than if it was natural.
  2. For bigger businesses and the internet business beginner, even if a lot of content is created with links, they point to a boring static website. (RULE #84 – Don’t link to boring corporate sites)

So to build inbound links, the big question becomes...

  • How can the content that is being created with back links be more relevant?
  • Another way of asking the same question is this, How can it be decided that content is to be determined humanly relevant using other measures than search engine robots and technical algorithms?

The answer isn’t obvious for everyone, so here is a big tip.

Pay close attention to the social buzz. Pay attention to the content (especially in your niche or industry) that is getting a lot of “thumbs up,” or “votes” or whatever other means to indicate that it is humanly relevant and valuable.

The SEO field is already seeing and feeling the effects of social media, but experts have determined we haven’t reached a big bang yet. The social media affect on SEO is predicted to come.
