The Importance Of Diversifying Your Social Media Efforts

By: Beth Hellman

We've all heard the phrase "Don't put all your eggs in one basket", haven't we? When it comes to using Social Media sites, the same thing holds true.

The ability to focus and concentrate your efforts is wonderful. I highly recommend it, especially in your early days of online marketing. But...(there always seems to be a but in there somewhere) when all of your social media activity is done exclusively on only one site, and that site has shall we say, issues. Your marketing activities could come to a screeching halt.

Let me give you an example that happened to me. Last week there was a ton of activity on Facebook and Twitter due to Michael Jackson's passing.

Everything was at a crawl. It took longer to get a 140 character message posted that it takes my six year old to take out the trash (he hates taking out the trash).

Along about evening time I checked my account, getting ready to "tweet" something and got the dreaded red banner "Your account has been suspended for suspicious activity" Eeeeek! I saw my life flash before my eyes. Having nearly 3000 followers on Twitter may not be much to the likes of Ashton Kutcher or Britney Spears, but they're my followers and I wanted 'em back. I didn't do anything that would have gotten me suspended. Really, I didn't.

Losing all my folks and having to start all over again would not have made me a happy camper.

Luckily, I didn't have to. Twitter admitted to a human error (ain't that usually the case?) and my account was restored. I learned a valuable lesson though.

Remember that these Social Media sites are a free service. While they're put online for all of us to use(and we're very grateful for them), we have very little control of what goes on behind the scenes. Someone sneezes and pushes the wrong button by mistake and months worth of networking could be compromised.

(Don't get too freaked out by that. Safeguards are in place to restore lost data, but those sites are doing us a service by existing in the first place)

There's a very simple solution to the inevitable internet hiccup and it's this...do your Social Media Marketing on more than one site.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of forums, blogs, Ning sites(more on Ning in another post) and social sites that are targeted specifically to your niche market.

Obviously you can't be a part of every one of them (when would you sleep :-)?), but you can choose 3-5 really good, active ones to join. Networking online in several areas will give you a broader reach and give you greater exposure to more people than just sticking with one huge site.

A great way to find those different Social Media Sites is to "Google" your specific target market and put "forum" or "blog" after it.

For example, "work at home mom forum", "foreclosure realtor blog" or "retired health care professional forum" will give you tons of places to network. Seek out people where they gather. You know, "birds of a feather, stick together" and all that jazz.

While speading your marketing effort too thin will get you thin results, contributing to a few really active blogs and forums will help you make a name for yourself and brand you as an expert. A great place to learn how to network on the internet for maximum results is at Renegade University. It's the best free resource on the internet.

Most important though is that you'll have peace of mind knowing your efforts in networking online will continue even if one of your Social Media sites has a bad hair day. Keep on socializing and Go get 'em!

The Merging of SEO and Social Media

By: Eric Walker

Understanding the Evolution of SEO and Social Media

First, let’s make a few common agreements about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and the relationship it has with Social Media.

If you agree with these SEO and Social Media agreements, I recommend you continue reading. If you disagree, you will want to state your disagreement in the comments area. I’m open to your feedback.

The purpose of this article is to shed light on the significant importance that SEO and Social Media have on each other. If you are using free and low cost web 2.0 Social Marketing methods for your internet business, this article will immediately provide you with a better understanding of how social media marketing impacts SEO.

The Four SEO and Social Media Agreements:

Agreement #1 – Social Media is here to stay. It’s not a fluke, and it’s going to rapidly alter the way business is done. As if it already hasn’t!

Agreement #2 – To understand the common elements that affect SEO is a important for your business because with time, practice and patience reaching atop the search engines for your keyword terms will provide better business security and opportunity.

Agreement #3 – Search engines such as Google are targeting social media. In other words, they’re keeping a close eye for what is happening socially on the internet.

They are ranking it and giving benefit to it because what the search engines want is what the people want, and how else can you tell what the people want?

Search engines such as Google best determine what the people want is to gauge what they’re paying attention to on the social web.

Agreement #4 – Generally speaking, successful SEO in today’s social web rely on two important factors:

  • Incoming links
  • Social buzz

SEO gurus now realize that the kinds of search engine rankings they seek through their cocktail of the pure SEO application process, and in-depth analysis over a period of time, is realized much sooner with a high quality social media marketing campaign. Social Media Marketing and Search Engine Optimization work in a interconnected way.

Effective Social Media Marketing Equates to Proper Content Syndication

The effective implementation and effect of successful social media marketing is known as content syndication.

Content syndication can be accomplished through the proper use of strategic social media networking to gain more traction through the parameters of various social media forms, technologies and applications.

So you don’t have to go through the hoops and tweaks of pure SEO, or be an SEO Geek. Yet it will benefit you to understand the relative Yin and Yang of social media networking and social media marketing. The two must work synergistically for maximum search engine rankings.

One factor of successful SEO is to build relevantly themed inbound links, and the more the better, but there are two conundrums:

  1. In order to create a lot of incoming links, you may have to purchase those links, which is not looked upon as favorably by the search engines than if it was natural.
  2. For bigger businesses and the internet business beginner, even if a lot of content is created with links, they point to a boring static website. (RULE #84 – Don’t link to boring corporate sites)

So to build inbound links, the big question becomes...

  • How can the content that is being created with back links be more relevant?
  • Another way of asking the same question is this, How can it be decided that content is to be determined humanly relevant using other measures than search engine robots and technical algorithms?

The answer isn’t obvious for everyone, so here is a big tip.

Pay close attention to the social buzz. Pay attention to the content (especially in your niche or industry) that is getting a lot of “thumbs up,” or “votes” or whatever other means to indicate that it is humanly relevant and valuable.

The SEO field is already seeing and feeling the effects of social media, but experts have determined we haven’t reached a big bang yet. The social media affect on SEO is predicted to come.

The Actions You Can Prepare to Take Now to Benefit from this Social Media Influenced SEO Wave

If you’re willing to jump in now, and learn the proper use of social media marketing and social media networking, and in particular, learn to use the forms, technologies and applications, you will be at a significant advantage.

Because when Social Media’s influence on SEO hits big time, when it really emerges, people will have to be ready for the shift it will force in the way internet business is run.

Get the social media marketing training you need to stay in front of this next movement so you will understand how to benefit in the new internet economy with your internet business.

Social Media Tips- How To Connect In A Meaningful Way

By: Beth Hellman

Whether you have a traditional offline business or have jumped into the world of online marketing, you've no doubt realized the power of social media to grow your business.

Besides the biggies like Facebook, MySpace, Linked-in and YouTube (oh, and don't forget Twitter), there are hundreds of smaller social media sites targeted to specific niches that are definitely worth seeking out.(Sidebar-Google your target niche. ex.-work at home moms. There's thousands of them)

The same rules apply to the little guys and the big guys. Here's some things to keep in mind.

-When you first join one of the social media sites, get a feel for the "voice" of the community. Check out some of the groups that have formed or read through the forum posts.

Every social site has it's own sense of "community" and you want to remember you're new to the neighborhood. No one invites the neighborhood know-it-all over for a Bar-B-Que and the Welcome Wagon flies right past their door. We know that's not you :-)

-Jump into the conversation and offer as much value as possible-without expecting anything in return. It's that ol' "what goes around, comes around" thing. People are naturally drawn to people who are helpful.

-Keep the self-promotional links to a minimum. Matter of fact, it may be a good idea to not use any at first until you establish yourself in the community. After you'll been involved for a while(I'm talking a few days to a week, not months), then sprinkle in a link to your blog or website (again when it's related to the topic at hand). Giving people valuable resources will establish you as an expert.

-Stay involved. The more conversations you have with folks, the more good information you can offer will only help you in your quest to attract folks to you. Pretty soon you'll be the go-to person for your chosen target market.

All-in-all online social networking is alot like going to networking events in the "real world". You'll find some great free tutorials on getting started with social media over at Renegade University. It will get your internet marketing started off on the right foot.

Treat the Social Media sites like you would Toastmasters or a networking lunch. The great thing about doing it online is that you can network any time of the day or night and "business casual" can be your jammies. How cool is that?

Happy Socializing.
