Michael Oliver is the author of “How to Sell Network Marketing
Without Fear, Anxiety or Losing Your Friends”. While the book is geared to the network marketer, the principles can be applied to any sales situation.
In his book, Michael Oliver helps us understand the true essence of selling, which is to be of service. It’s a natural exchange and a win-win situation. If you’re of service, then you should expect to get paid for it. Remember that people love to buy, but hate to be sold.
Unfortunately, most people don’t get that concept and engage in what Oliver calls “traditional selling”. Traditional selling relies on techniques that persuade people to do what you want them to do. This is especially true in network marketing.
Think of your traditional network marketing training. You are taught to write a list of names of friends and family and invite them to a meeting, a teleconference or a webinar. You learn how to set an appointment, get people to attend a presentation and handle objections. Any listening is done with the intent to find a way to introduce your opportunity.
As most network marketers know, this often results in resistance and rejection. After all, nobody likes to be manipulated. And presenting too early is the number one cause of objections and rejection.
How many times have you seen someone in need of your business opportunity or products and they won’t listen to you because you told them what they should do? Most people don’t want to be told you have the right answer for them.
What people really want is to be listened to and understood. And that is

With natural selling, the focus is on building a relationship and understanding your potential partner’s problems. You do this by creating meaningful dialogue – heart-to-heart communication.

There are four main principles in Michael Oliver’s natural selling approach:
- Help other people solve their problems – ask “how can I help” vs. “what’s in it for me”.
- Listen to what is being meant, not just what is being said – truly listen with the intent to understand the facts and feelings of where someone is coming from
- Ask the right questions at the right time – people have the answers, all you need are the right questions
- Feed back what you think you heard they want – when you understand what a person is really looking for and why they want it, you can customize your solution and present it in a way that it personally means something to them.
Natural selling is a process of discovery. You have to let go of your attachment to the outcome. Forget what you learned about bringing up your opportunity the first chance you get. You only want to bring up your agenda when you know the other person is looking for a change and you think your solution is the right one for them.
If you really want natural selling to be an important part of your network marketing training, then you have to embody the principles behind it. Don’t just give it lip service. People will be able to see right through that. Your intent to serve and be a solutions provider has to be real and true. “People will no longer accept being persuaded to buy. Your business has to manifest that you’re in it for them... not you! And you have to live and breathe that belief.”
